Ashwatthama's Redemption : The Rise of Dandak

Book Review No. 9 -

Book Name - Ashwatthama's Redemption: The Rise of Dandak
Author - Gunjan Porwal
Publication - Om Books International
Pages - 264

The Story Unfolds :

Main Characters - Many because of its genre..but still to name a few: Rana, Ashwatthama, Vikram, Dandak.

Blurb :
Over a hundred years after the Mahabharata war, an ancient power threatens to destroy the new age of men, by establishing the Age of Terror of the asuras, long believed to be extinct. The only hurdle in its path is Guru Dronacharya's son, the mighty but accursed warrior Ashwatthama, who lost all his powers following Lord Krishna's curse, and who unwittingly finds himself drawn into the quest of the lost bow of Lord Rama - the kodanda.

As ghosts of the distant past, return to haunt him, and the line between friends and enemies blurs, Ashwatthama must fight his inner demons to emerge victorious. He undertakes a perilous journey- across the vast plains of the Ganges, to the snow-capped peaks of the himavant- where the price of failure is a fate worse than death, and death is a privilege not granted to ashwatthama.

Is this part of lord Krishna's great plan ? will ashwatthama be able to regain his lost glory?

Writing -

The writing is simple and lucid. The narration is very precise and focused on the plot, the author has not lost focus during the entire writing and has not gone off the road in describing the sub-plots.
The Humor and new age words + Fiction + mythology + clear and crisp writing have spiced up the thriller very nicely.

Characterization -

The author has penned the friendship of Rana, Vikram, and Ashwatthama beautifully despite having age gaps. They can be termed as old age 3 idiots. Initial chapters have gone just to introduce the different characters and story build up.

What I like :

1) The book starts with Sanskrit shlokas.
2) Use of imagery in the book.
3) Easy to understand language.
4) Story depiction is so beautiful that u can visualize the whole story in your mind.
5) The journey through which the warrior goes are very adventurous and thrilling.

What I did not like :

1) Although I liked the book, somewhere in middle after the first half of the book it lacks pace and becomes a little monotonous.

My last word :

As a debutant author, he has done a commendable job because it takes a great zeal, potential, and effort with research to build such a strong plot and facts and figures. The book has ended at an amazing scene where you keep guessing that whether part 2 is on the cards or not?
It's definitely on the cards. I am damn excited. are you?

My rating for the book is 4.5/5
Book cover looks tempting - 4.5/5
Plot - 4.5/5

  1. I have been reflecting upon the origins of stories lately, why the collective unconscious of the society tends to like some stories over others and how myths develop and why the religious texts and stories strike with humanity and all those sorts of things.

Ever heard of Dr Jordan Peterson- He is a psychologist and a professor in the unitversity of Toronto in Canada, I have been deeply influenced by him. Anyway, the point is this review or perhaps the plot of the book reminded me of the origins of stories for some reason and how they stay alive for eternity.

Anyway, stories are awesome and we need to tell our children more stories of these sorts, I think. A little more insight into the writing would be much preferred I think. None the less, things evolve over time. Keep'em coming.
